How Young is Too Young to Start Giving Your Children Supplements?

Research has shown that it is safe to provide a probiotic supplement to children as young as 3 months old. Probiotics are the healthy bacteria that you find in yogurt and fermented foods. The use of probiotics in infants has been “associated with a lower frequency of reported colic or irritability and a lower frequency of antibiotic use.”

There are a couple options available for supplementing your infant with probiotics. If you are breastfeeding, you can simply have the mother take a probiotic supplement or eat the foods that contain probiotics. If you the baby is formula fed, many of the popular formula makers are now producing a variety that contains added probiotics. Also, there are probiotic supplements that you can buy and add directly to your infant’s formula or your child’s favorite drink.
